In our ongoing effort to support the KAUST community and facilitate a smooth transition to compliance with the Kingdom’s regulations for gas-powered scooters, we are pleased to announce a final extension of the previously communicated deadline. The new deadline for obtaining a Saudi Motorcycle Driving License and registering gas-powered scooters with Saudi Motorcycle Registration and Plates has been extended to June 30, 2025.
Please note, this deadline will not be extended again. We strongly encourage all community members to make the necessary arrangements well before this date to ensure full compliance.
Motorcycle registration and plate update
All gas-powered scooters must still receive a motorcycle registration and plate, but Government Affairs (GA) has worked with the Motor Vehicles Periodic Inspection authority to simplify the process. GA actively working to bring a mobile inspection station to KAUST, which aims to provide a convenient option for vehicle inspection tests on campus for a limited period. More details about this service will be announced soon and made available on GA’s Motorcycle Registration and Plate webpage.
Motorcycle driving license update
All drivers of gas-powered scooters will still be required to have a Saudi motorcycle driving license, but we understand the challenges involved in meeting these requirements. We are encouraged by the positive progress in ongoing discussions between Government Affairs and the Saudi General Department of Traffic. We will inform you of any further developments, and the information will be placed on GA’s Motorcycle Driving License webpage.
Key reminders
- Any new gas-powered scooters or new scooter drivers at KAUST must follow the Saudi process to obtain a license plate and/or driving license.
- Gas-powered scooters without Saudi plates or scooter drivers with Saudi licenses are not permitted to exit the KAUST campus.
- These requirements do not apply to golf cart license plates or driving permits, which remain unaffected by these changes.
- Motor insurance is required to drive Category 1-3 vehicles in KAUST, including gas-powered scooters (see section 3.16 Insurance of the Road Safety Code). Review your vehicle insurance policies to ensure the prerequisites for maintaining coverage are met. Contact your insurance provider directly with any questions about coverage limitations.
Thank you for your attention to this matter and your continued cooperation in maintaining safety and compliance within our community.
Sincerely,
HSE Department
