Important Flu information from KMC

Dear Community members,

The following announcement is to refresh your knowledge about flu-like illnesses in general and in particular about those caused by H1N1 (Swine flu). H1N1 flu continues to circulate seasonally worldwide however for high risk individuals, it can be more severe than the regular flu. WHO & CDC do not consider H1N1 a serious illness anymore and recommend that it be treated like any other seasonal flu virus.

KMC continues to observe cases of various seasonal flu viruses and recommends that everyone practice the safety measures mentioned below.

FLU Vaccination

Flu vaccination is considered the best mode of protection against many flu viruses including H1N1.

KMC encourages all community members to get a flu shot if you have not been vaccinated during the last 12 months, especially the following: children from 6 months to 5 years of age, pregnant ladies, people with chronic illnesses like Diabetes and Asthma, and patients with suppressed immune systems.

General Precautions

Healthy people and individuals showing flu-like symptoms should take precautionary measures and we recommend strict compliance to the following health guidelines to reduce the spread of viruses in general:

  • Use a tissue to cover the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing and then properly dispose of the used tissue in the trash.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, especially after coughing or sneezing and help young children do the same. Rubbing hands well with a sanitizing solution is also effective if soap and water are not available.
  • Try to avoid touching the eyes, nose, and mouth by an unwashed hand, because it can transmit the flu virus after touching surfaces contaminated with the virus.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as doorknobs, TV remotes, mobile phones, and children’s toys.
  • Avoid overcrowded areas. When possible, keep a distance of about one meter between yourself and others.
  • Avoid physical contact when greeting others.
  • Do not share cups or eating utensils with people who have a cough or fever.
  • If you have a high fever, severe cough, chest pain or shortness of breath or an overall sense of ill health for more than two days, wear a face mask and visit your physician or emergency department.
  • When visiting a farm or a barn, adhere to general hygiene measures, such as regular hand washing before and after touching animals, avoiding contact with sick animals, and following food hygiene practices.
