Important Details for Commencement 2017

We are excited to welcome families and distinguished guests to share in the celebration of Commencement 2017.

Ceremony speakers this year include our student speaker, Hassan M. Alsibyani, M.S. candidate in Computer Science, and our distinguished guest speaker, Dr. Jean-Lou Chameau, former KAUST President and President Emeritus of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

The entire KAUST community is invited to attend this event.

We hope you will join us for the commencement celebrations, as we celebrate the Class of 2017.

Seating for the Ceremony:

  • Commencement seating will start at 6:30 p.m. and everyone is expected to be seated by 7:15 p.m.
  • People participating in the academic processional and ceremony will be seated in designated areas. For all other attendees, including family members and guests, seating will be on a first come, first serve basis.
  • The seating is outdoors, so please be sure to wear appropriate attire.

Access to Ceremony Site:

  • All guests will be required to present their KAUST ID or Commencement ID if requested by members of Security Services.
  • The main pedestrian entrance to the ceremony area will be the north end of the Discovery Walk (spine) near the Student Center (building 18). The entrance on level 0 of building 14 will be open to allow entry for guests with reduced mobility.
  • Vehicle access is restricted at Gate 6 (facing the Administration Building) from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
  • There will be limited access to the Discovery Walk area between Al-Jazri (building 4) and Al-Khawarizmi (building 1) during the ceremony.

Parking:

  • Parking is available for staff, students, and commencement visitors at the North Garage, which can be accessed by the campus Gate 10 (the gate facing the residential area near Discovery Square).
  • Parking is also available at the Tamimi Supermarket.
  • Parking of bicycles, scooters, or motorcycles is not allowed near the commencement area, the University Library and Discovery Walk between buildings 4 and 18.

Special Operating Hours:

  • The Campus Diner will be open for normal operations on December 15 and will extend its hours for à la carte service from 9 p.m. to midnight.
  • Select retail food establishments will remain open until midnight on December 15.

Shuttle Service to the Commencement Dinner, December 14:

Shuttles will run from 6:45 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., looping every 10 minutes from the following stops:

  • Stop 1: Visitor Center – Main Gate (Guests will be required to provide valid KAUST or Commencement ID.)
  • Stop 2: Tamimi Supermarket
  • Stop 3: KAUST Inn 2
  • Stop 4: King Abdullah Grand Mosque
  • Stop 5: Harbor Walk Car Park
  • Stop 6: Commencement Dinner Ceremony stop by Yacht Club

Shuttles will run from 8:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., looping every 10 minutes in reverse order of the stops.

Shuttle Service to Commencement Ceremony, December 15:

Shuttle service to the ceremony will run between 3:00 p.m. and 11 p.m., looping every 10 minutes from the following stops:

  • Stop 1: Visitor Center – Main Gate (Guests will be required to provide valid KAUST or Commencement ID.)
  • Stop 2: Tamimi Supermarket
  • Stop 3: KAUST Inn 2
  • Stop 4: King Abdullah Grand Mosque
  • Stop 5: Harbor Walk Car Park
  • Stop 6: Commencement Ceremony stop, building 18

Special Notes: There will be no shuttle service to the Administration Building from 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on December 15. Travel on off-campus buses to Jeddah/Makkah/Medina is not open to Commencement ID holders.
