KAUST HSE Guided Bird Walks are starting again soon. Join other community members on walks through some of the best birdwatching areas at KAUST. Over 250 species of bird have been seen on the Campus. Many of these are migrant species. As the Fall migration period is starting this should be an ideal opportunity to see a good range of water species.
Our walks usually last around 90 minutes and we hope to see at least 30 different species and we often encounter other types of wildlife including rays, sharks, butterflies and dragonflies. Even if you are not that interested in birds come along and enjoy learning about the wildlife on your doorstep. We always have a number of pairs of binoculars available for the use of participants.
Two walks are open to all community members. The first is around the Island Mangroves. We will meet at the Island Mosque at 6:30 a.m. on Friday, August 31 and take a circular trail around the back of the Coral Garden Route passing through some excellent stands of mangroves.
The second walk will be around the golf course on Sunday, September 2 starting at 5:30 p.m. Many of the migrant species visit the golf course to take advantage of the feeding opportunities and the denser areas of cover. We will finish up looking at the always productive main lake where a good variety of herons is usually guaranteed. The golf course is closed for play on Sundays and so we will not be threatened by flying golf balls during our visit.
Finally on Sunday September 9 we will have a Junior Bird Walk also at the golf course. This will begin at 5:00 p.m. and last one hour. This ‘walk’ is limited to 12 participants and aimed at children under 12 years of age. Parents are encouraged to accompany their children. When registering for the Junior Walks parents should ‘sign-up’ for their children.
