In the framework of the Global University Climate Forum, last year the Students for Sustainability group, with the support of the Office of Sustainability, reviewed the Campus Diner customers’ opinions about the diner experience. They then reached out to KAUST Food Services and Tamimi Team to propose ideas towards a healthier and more sustainable dining experience (here you can read the survey and final report). These are the outcomes of this fruitful collaboration:
1. More plant-based food
- The vegetarian counter is totally plant-based now
- Vegan pizza (Monday and Thursday)
- Vegetarian and falafel burger (except weekend)
- Several options for vegan/vegetarian sandwiches are available (beans, falafel, and halloumi) (except weekend)
- More plant-based proteins in the salad bar (chickpeas, beans, lentils, and quinoa) (except weekend)
- Vegetarian section with multiple vegetarian options are available next to the budget meal counter
2. Half portions are available for most of the chef special meals
3. No more plastic cups and lids by default in juice corner (available by request)
4. Ramekin containers have replaced the plastic ones for the salad bar additions
5. Paper takeaway boxes instead of the plastic ones at the salad bar
As a customer, there are many ways you can support this initiative!
- Try the plant-based options more and more often, and learn why it is important
- Less food waste. If you are not so hungry, bring your container to pack leftovers or go for a half-portion meal
- Remember to bring your reusable container and cup for takeaway food
- Use the water dispensers instead of buying packaged water
Students for Sustainability group will keep in contact with Kaust Food Services and Tamimi Team to support further improvements.
