In a touching and festive ceremony last night, with all due pomp & circumstance, 25 seniors from The KAUST School received their diplomas from Chairman of the KAUST School Board of Directors Fouad Gabbani and School Superintendent Madeleine Hewitt. Click below to view a photo gallery.
Faculty followed by the Seniors processed into KAUST’s Auditorium where they were eagerly awaited by the assembled proud parents, families, and community members. The processional music of Handel and Mozart was followed by an excellent rendition of the Saudi National anthem sung by the entire class and led by Daniah Alsadi. After warm remarks by Ms. Hewitt and Principal Jennifer Lees, senior Fahad Almojel gave a lovely piano performance of a song entitled “Gone”. This was followed by two inspiring and funny Senior Addresses delivered by seniors David Zhang and Razan Mal. The KAUST School Choir then sang a moving, tender rendition of a song called “Hear You Me”.
Only an inspiring speech by teacher Kimberly Halverson, “To be, or not to be”, stood between the seniors’ status as high school students and their future as university undergraduates. Reflecting on excerpts from the literature she and her students had studied, Ms. Halverson urged the graduating seniors to make choices, seize life and continue to seek knowledge, learn, and be open to change and growth forever. By all evidence in the bright and smiling faces of these wonderful young members of our community, they have already taken the lesson on board.
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
– Robert Frost
To be, or not to be, that is the question:
Whether ’tis Nobler in the mind to suffer
The Slings and Arrows of outrageous Fortune,
Or to take Arms against a Sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them:
– William Shakespeare
