Community Milestone: Advancing sustainability together

KAUST has reached an important sustainability milestone, diverted approximately 60% of municipal solid waste from landfill for the second consecutive year. In addition, the total waste generation decreased by 15% in 2025.

This achievement was driven by strong participation from students, residents, staff, retail outlets, and service partners. who actively participate in waste sorting, recycling, and composting initiatives across campus.

The KAUST Composting Program processed around 3,100 tons of food and organic waste last year (2025) at the onsite facility, transforming organic material into valuable compost. This progress would not have been possible without the KAUST community and the support of waste services partners Averda and Edama Organic Solutions.

As efforts continue, improving source segregation remains a priority, as 40–50% of food waste is still sent to landfill.

Campus and Community (C&C) continued engagement in sustainable practices and the KAUST Composting Program.

Community tips

Separate your food waste

  • Place only organic waste in designated organic bins.
  • An external organic bin will be provided following registration.
  • Avoid non-organic items, as they disrupt the composting process.
