A Reminder About Vacations

If you are planning vacation leave for the summer break, here are a few simple tips to keep your house in good condition and protect your valuables while you’re away:

  • Assign a caretaker by completing the Caretaker Form and sending it to Housing housing@kaust.edu.sa
  • Shut off the water valves underneath your kitchen and bathroom sinks, and shut off the flexible hose to help stop leaks
  • Leave the air conditioner on auto and set it to 27C (73F) to avoid condensation and the formation of mold
  • Ensure that all floor drains are uncovered to prevent flooding if a water leak occurs
  • All doors and windows should be closed to avoid condensation.
  • Ensure the roof access is locked and secure
  • Make arrangements for the upkeep of your backyard, as required by clause 14 of the Housing Agreement by calling 959, Gardening at 808 5480, or by e-mail at gardening@kaust.edu.sa

For any clarifications, please contact Housing at 808 6555 or by email at housing@kaust.edu.sa.

You may contact Maintenance via the KAUST Helpdesk by dialing 959.

Remember, protecting your possessions and your rented unit is your responsibility and your cooperation is highly appreciated.

Thank you for the reminder. 27 Centigrade is just over 80 Fahrenheit so probably better to set the thermostat somewhere in the low twenties on the Centigrade scale.

Dear Trish.
The temperature may appear high but it is correct. This temperature will optimize the AC compressor running time when the unit is unattended whilst still maintaining air circulation reducing the likelihood of leaks etc. As the outside air temperature rises through the summer months it is necessary to reduce the temperature differential between outside and in to minimize the amount of condensation buildup and reduce the potential for mold formation. I hope this helps but if you would like any further information please don’t hesitate in contacting me at energyconservation@kaust.edu.sa

Your announcement states that we should set our thermostats to 27 C (73 F). There is a mistake in your math. When you convert 27 C to the F scale, you get 80.6 F, not 73 F as it states in the article. 73 F converts to 22.77 C, or thereabouts.

My comment was an attempt to clarify which number quoted in the original post was correct – is it the 27 C or the 73 F?

True. it is a conversion mistake. the recommended set point when leaving for vacation should be 27C or 80F.
