The Water Desalination and Reuse Center (WDRC) will be taking the lead on the organization of the World Water Day 2023 celebrations at KAUST (with support from the Office of Sustainability); scheduled during the week starting March 19, 2023. World Water Day is an annual United Nations Observance, started in 1993, that celebrates water and raises awareness of the 2 billion people currently living without access to safe water. A core focus of World Water Day is to inspire action towards Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: Water and sanitation for all by 2030.

This year’s theme is “ACCELERATING CHANGE” and focuses on accelerating change to solve the water and sanitation crisis. And because water affects us all, we need everyone to take action.

You can find more details on this event on the official World Water Day page here, and make your personal commitments to solve the water and sanitation crisis here.

The Water Desalination and Reuse Center is collecting initiatives to celebrate this event, so KAUST can offer a day (or more) of activities for the campus population and surrounding community to learn and celebrate the significance of the day.

Kindly fill out this form by no later than Tuesday, February 28, 2023, with the activities you would like to suggest from your department. If multiple activities are offered, please submit them separately.

The timeline of actions will be:

  • Tuesday, February 28, 2023 – deadline to submit contributions for World Water Day Celebrations
  • Monday, March 7, 2023 –  announcement draft ready for comments and review
  • Sunday, March 19 – KAUST announcement

The World Water Day 2023 is on March 22, 2023; but due to the holy month of Ramadan likely commencing on March 22, we are planning that major activities to celebrate this year’s World Water Day takes place before March 22 (specifically on March 20 and March 21).

Please feel free to forward this email to anyone you think should know about this and do not hesitate to contact us or the Office of Sustainability, if you require any support in preparation for this auspicious occasion at KAUST.

We are looking forward to seeing your contributions to World Water Day 2023!
