Computational Bioscience Research Center (CBRC) at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology is pleased to announce the Bio-Hackathon MENA 2023. The aim of this challenge is to stimulate synergy in the bioinformatics community within the MENA region and beyond.

This event is co-organized with the Women to Impact (WTI) team. It is supported and sponsored by the KAUST Smart-Health Initiative, and in partnership with Women in Science, Engineering and Research (WISER) 2023.

The Bio-Hackathon will bring together researchers with corresponding skills and knowledge in order to work together and generate bioinformatics software and interoperable resources with a focus on the Middle East, as well as establish scientific collaborations across computational bioscience.

The Bio-Hackathon will take place from February 7 to 11, 2023, at the KAUST Research and Technology Park (KRTP). The top 20 project submitters, and the top qualified developers who also applied, will be invited to participate in the Bio-Hackathon. The Bio-Hackathon is open to any expert worldwide in the field of bioinformatics, and women are encouraged to participate and take the opportunity to connect with accomplished researchers during the different stages of the event. More details about the Bioinformatics and Genomics Bootcamp for women in Saudi Arabia, which will be run in collaboration with the Bio-Hackathon, can be found here.

The outcome of this Bio-Hackathon will include bioinformatics workflows, scripts and software. Resources developed during the event must be open source and will be added to public repositories, such as Github.

Topics for this year’s Bio-Hackathon are listed below. Submitted projects that have a clear link to MENA interests will be prioritized for inclusion.

  • Data and text mining (with focus on Middle East)
  • Interoperable resources, databases, ontologies (with focus on Middle East)
  • Reproducible workflows for data analysis and interpretation (with focus on Middle East)
  • Bioinformatics software
  • Machine learning and AI methods
