1st week of WEP 2021 in numbers

A cumulative audience of 7,000 people registered to attend our events through our platform. Last week, we organized eight keynote lectures, five distinguished lectures, seven courses and workshops, three film screenings, one panel discussion and one performance.

The 2021 WEP program was opened by H.E. Eng. Abdullah Al-Swaha – Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology – and our president Tony Chan. 

Over 230,000 people watched our events online through KAUST’s Facebook and YouTube channels, 25,800 people engaged with us on social media and the WEP 2021 posts had a total of 608,000 impressions on social media.

More than 400 KAUST and in-Kingdom students from different disciplines completed a machine learning course designed for WEP 2021 by Dr. Adnan Qamar and Dr. Naeemullah Khan.  (See the photo of the proud students)

ARTS & SCIENCE— 1:30 – 2:30 PM
Join the discussion and attend the panel discussion Wild-Card: When Scientists and Artists Collaborate brings together scientists from environmental and material science at KAUST and ETH Zurich and artists from Saudi Arabia and Switzerland to discuss the potential of connecting heterogeneous knowledge from the Arts, Science and Technology.

MACHINE LEARNING— 5:30 – 6:30 PM
Don’t miss the keynote lecture Monitoring People and their Vital Signs Using Radio Signals and Machine Learning by Prof. Dina Katabi, Director of the Center for Wireless Networks and Mobile Computing, MIT.

Film Festival — Not to be missed tomorrow!

JANUARY 19 — 1:00 – 3:00 PM | Auditorium (bldg. 20)

Film Festival – The Social Dilemma: Moviegoers on campus, join us in the Auditorium of building 20 for a film festival screening and discussion led by KAUST’s IT department. This documentary-drama hybrid explores the dangerous human impact of social networking, with tech experts sounding the alarm on their own creations.

TKS 2021 Science Fair: Young scientists from TKS drew from their innate curiosity and took responsibility to independently engage in innovative and engaging projects. Visit the Padlet to view evidence of their experimentation, read about their findings and leave encouraging comments.

Information Security Office – KAUST IT: We live in a time when technology is rapidly evolving and the need to protect data and systems is essential. With all the cybersecurity attacks you hear about in the news, how can you be sure that and your data is safe? The Information Security Office (ISO) at KAUST IT has the answer. Learn tips to practice online safety and help protect KAUST from cybersecurity threats!

Sustainability Hub : Have you heard of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and how higher education plays a role in advancing these goals? This platform aims to enrich your knowledge on sustainability and how vital is it to our future. This platform is developed by Students for Sustainability (S Square), a KAUST student organization aspiring to drive change towards sustainability with a positive impact.
