Open Access global trends and CMU experiences

Abstract

This lecture will review the growth of open access in recent years and consider the position of major publishers as they adjust their business models. Key developments at present include the impact of Plan S, the shift towards transformative read and publish agreements and the impact of mergers and acquisitions on the commercial landscape.

The lecture will illustrate the opportunities and challenges for individual institutions by reviewing agreements established between Carnegie Mellon and leading commercial, society, university and open access publishers.

About the speaker

Prof. Keith Webster is the Dean of University Libraries and Director of Emerging and Integrative Media Initiatives at Carnegie Mellon University. Prior to this, Keith was Vice President for the global publishing company John Wiley and Sons, Dean of Libraries and University Librarian at the University of Queensland in Australia, University Librarian at Victoria University in New Zealand, Head of Information Policy at HM Treasury, London, and Director of Information Services at the School of Oriental & African Studies, University of London. 

Keith has held professorships in information science at Victoria University of Wellington and City University, London. He is a Chartered Fellow and an Honorary Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (UK), and ex-Chair of the National Information Standards Organization.
