What are the fundamentals of where our food comes from? Why did our ancestors choose to cultivate the crops they did out of the thousands of natural plant species? If you had to rebuild the world after an apocalyptic event, where would you start from to feed the community of survivors? Find out with Lewis Dartnell, astrobiology professor at the University of Westminster.

5:30 – 7:00 p.m.
Auditorium (bldg. 20)

By the middle of the 21st century, the world population will increase by 30% to more than nine billion people. Food production will need to grow by 70% to meet increased demands. Find out what the challenges and solutions are to feeding nine billion people with Fred Davies, regents professor in the Department of Horticultural Sciences at Texas A&M University.

Genetic technology’s role in global food security
Tuesday, October 18
5:30 – 7:00 p.m.

One billion people are hungry, an additional one billion people suffer malnutrition and an additional one billion are overweight, or obese. If the rate of increase in food production continues on its present trajectory, these figures will significantly worsen by 2050. John Bedbrook, executive chairman of DiCE Molecules Holdings, LLC, will discuss the sources of changing food demands and estimates of the increase in food production required to meet these demands.
