The ancient routes of Al-Ula—an introduction to Mada’in Saleh, Dedan and the Hejaz railway

By Dr. Laurence Hapiot, archaeological and cultural outreach fellow, Office of the President.

Due to its strategic location on the frankincense and later pilgrimage road, the area of Al-Ula located in the north of Madinah province has played a major role in Arabian history from pre-Islamic to modern times. The archeological sites that will be discussed testify to these prosperous episodes.

Dedan, also known as Al-Khurayba is located on the flanks of Wadi al-Qura, close to the modern city of Al-Ula. We can find there a large necropolis dating back to the Dedanite and Lihyan kingdoms.

Hegra, popularly known as Mada’in Saleh, was the second most important city of the Nabataean Kingdom. Over a hundred monumental tombs—86 of which have a decorated façade—carved into sandstone hills are the most prominent feature. It was named a UNESCO world heritage site in 2008.

Al-Ula old town dates back to the 13th century A.D. It consists of around 800 dwellings and a large souk build of mud and stone.

Finally, the history of the Hejaz Railway will be presented to illustrate the stations of Mada’in Saleh and Al Ula.

Logistical information for the upcoming Government Affairs organized trip to Al-Ula will also be shared with the participants.

This event is organized by the Office of the President and Government Affairs.
