The Office of the Arts welcomes those who are interested in joining our three community music groups – the Orchestra, the Chorus and the Angklung Ensemble. All three groups will soon prepare for this semester’s Community Concert, scheduled for Monday, April 18.

The Orchestra is made up of individuals with previous experience of playing a musical instrument; a string instrument (violin, viola, cello, or bass), a wind instrument (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon), or a brass instrument (French horn, trumpet, trombone or tuba). The Orchestra conductor is Eduardo Regula a MYP music teacher at the Gardens Secondary School. Weekly rehearsals begin on Monday, February 29 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. in the Auditorium (bldg. 20). To join, kindly schedule an informal interview by contacting the Office of the Arts: artsoffice@kaust.edu.sa.

The Chorus is made up of individuals from the community who have some prior knowledge of music reading; however, the main objective is the enjoyment of singing in an ensemble. The conductor is Robert Moore, with Mary Moore as the chorus accompanist. Weekly rehearsals begin on Tuesday, February 23 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. in the Auditorium (bldg. 20).

The Angklung is a traditional Indonesian musical instrument made of bamboo tubes, attached to a frame. Each Angklung has a specific pitch that can be produced by shaking the Angklung and each member of the ensemble creates one or two pitches. Playing the notes together creates a song with harmonies. All musical levels are welcome and Angklung Ensemble conductor Burhannudin Sutisna, a Ph.D. candidate, will teach all newcomers. Weekly rehearsals begin on Sunday, February 14 from 7:15 – 8:30 p.m. in the Auditorium (bldg. 20).
