Bicycle Safety Reminder

We have many cyclists at KAUST and road safety is an important concern whether you cycle, drive, walk, or ride. If you or your family members ride bicycles, be safe on the roads and ensure that helmets are worn (mandatory for those under 16 years old) and that all bicycles are fitted with lights and reflectors.

  1. Thanks for this reminder – I bike often and have a car and am always surprised by how hard it is to see bikes without lights at night when I’m driving. I know the KAUST streets are very well lit, but for some reason and in some places, bikers can still be quite hard to see.

I’m glad that the bike lights are now easily available here at KAUST, and hope that everyone will start using them soon.

    • I agree how important this is, and that lights are easily available – unfortunately some people think it’s a good joke to steal them too though!Someone unscrewed the front light from my bike and stole it! I’m reluctant to buy a new one as the same thing is bound to happen if this is a current trend.

  2. May I also mention that when wearing a bicycle or motorbike helmet it is important that you fasten the chin-strap. I have seen many people on both bicycles and motorbikes wearing unfastened helmets. Please remember that the helmet is there to protect the head in case of a fall – an unfastened helmet offers very little protection.

  3. Thank you all for your positive feedback of this safety reminder. HSE mission is to get all community members involved in creating a safe culture at KAUST.

If you may need any support or have any suggestion to make KAUST a safer place to work and live in, please let us know.

    Best Regards,
    Health, Safety and Environment Department

  4. Cyclists should also remember that they need to obey stop signs and traffic lights. I have witnessed too many close calls caused by people on bicycles not following traffic rules. Larger vehicles are not able to stop as quickly and could cause a serious accident trying to avoid a cyclist running a stop sign or red light. Hand signals are also helpful so motorists are aware of turns and lane changes and can be ready to stop or yield.

  5. There is obviously a group of people here on KAUST who think it is hilarious to remove cycle lights – I have now had back light taken… am not at all amused as I often leave the office late and in the dark. Its not a question of cost but a question of trust and I honestly believed KAUST would not suffer such foolish behaviour! If the ‘thief’ reads this please stop – you are potentially going to be the cause of a serious accident + this is theft no matter how you look at it!
