As part of KAUST’s ongoing sustainability efforts to achieve its zero-waste-to-landfill goal, the Campus Diner will have new charges for each disposable takeaway container used from October 15.

  • Big Aluminum Container – 3 SAR
  • Medium Aluminum Container- 2 SAR
  • Small Aluminum Container- 1 SAR
  • Big Salad Coated Paper Container- 2 SAR
  • Small Salad Coated Paper Container- 1 SAR
  • Plastic Sauce Cup- 50 HALALA

This new fee aims to discourage disposable container usage and increase the community’s participation in the Reusable Container Program, created as a collaboration between Community Life, Students for Sustainability and the Office of Sustainability.

Poly-coated paper containers and aluminum container lids are mostly non-recyclable and are currently disposed of in landfills. Moreover, the recycling of aluminum containers depends on their thorough cleanliness and absence of food contaminants, which currently renders most of these disposable food containers unrecyclable and directs them to landfills.

These steps consolidate KAUST’s commitment to achieving responsible consumption and a reduction of generated waste in our community.

Please see below how you can be part of the program and contribute towards a waste-free campus.

Get your reusable takeout containers at the Campus Diner

Did you know that you can join the Reusable Container Program by simply placing a deposit and collecting a reusable container to take out your meal?

Once you are done, just return the dirty container and get another, or take a token to exchange for a clean container the next time you need one. You can drop out of the program at any time and get your deposit back.

Bring your reusable container from home

In addition to the Reusable Container Program, we also encourage you to bring your own reusable containers from home.

The Reusable Container Program is designed to encourage the KAUST community to adopt sustainable practices and make a positive impact on the environment.

We hope you will join us in this effort!
