April 17 – September 12, 2024
Sunday to Thursday, 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
April 24, 5.30 p.m. Curator tour with Yasmine Maktabi and Solkem N’Gangbet
University Library (Building 12)

From Persia to Ottoman Turkey, via the Caucasus Mountains, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, take a journey through time and explore a curated selection of antique rugs and Islamic art treasures from the third generation carpet house Iwan Maktabi.

Discover the enduring beauty and craftsmanship of these remarkable pieces, each bearing witness to centuries of history and cross-cultural exchange, foreign relationships, trade and diplomacy.

Many of the objects on display were made by hand, predominantly dyed by hand, and hand-woven using the hand-knotted weaving technique. Though the individual identities of the makers are mostly unknown, broad thematic sections highlight distinct categories: nomadic and seminomadic; court and commercial workshops; and regional cottage industries with a sub-section on prayer rugs.

With this jewel of an exhibition, the Office of the Arts invites you to delve into the intricate patterns, vibrant colors and timeless elegance of these woven legacies, and their time-honored construction, history and desirability.

The brother-sister trio bring together the know-how of discovering rare antique pieces on the one hand, and on the other, the skills to design and produce contemporary carpet collections of bespoke and collectible art with the intervention of artists, architects and designers.

Specializing in handwoven carpets, rugs and textiles, the brand showcases a unique blend of traditional techniques and contemporary aesthetics, catering to the most discerning clients around the globe.
