Mohamed Maktabi, co-founder and CEO of Iwan Maktabi, brings over 25 years of expertise in the world of one-of-a-kind antique and contemporary carpets, as well as Islamic art. His work celebrates hand-made practices, explores the origins of materials, and drives innovation through collaborations with world-renowned designers, artists, and creatives, alongside participation in prestigious exhibitions and international fairs.
In 1995, Mohamed and his sisters launched Iwan Maktabi, departing from the family’s Mother Company, established in 1920 by his grandfather. Iwan Maktabi quickly became a haven for handpicked designer carpets, antique treasures, and rare Islamic art, catering to collectors and connoisseurs. Guided by a passion for history-rich, unique creations that bridge the past and contemporary trends, the company expanded its reach across Saudi Arabia, the Gulf region, and from Zurich, in Switzerland, to the rest of Europe.
Today, Iwan Maktabi Gallery is firmly established as the go-to destination for high-value carpets and textile art, solidifying a reputation for excellence. Drawing on three generations of expertise and a rich private collection, Mohamed and his sisters continue to deepen the global appreciation for carpets as both art and cultural heritage.
In this lecture, Mohamed Maktabi will take us on a captivating historical journey, exploring all major periods of weaving from 2500 BC to the end of the 19th century.
This presentation promises unparalleled insights into the rich traditions and evolution, exceptional craftmanship, cultural significance, and enduring allure of the world’s most extraordinary carpets.
