Single-serve coffee makers, such as Nespresso, support growers, but also create a lot of waste. Aluminium, a valuable, energy-intensive resource winds up in landfills. Recycling is a shared responsibility and the KAUST community’s participation is essential in keeping Saudi Arabia nice and clean.
Do your share by recycling your coffee capsules (any brand) to the collection bin closest to you. If you share a single-use coffee maker at work, why not collect the capsules in a container and drop them when it’s full. It’s quite simple, and everyone will benefit from it.
The bins are located in the entrance of the Tamimi supermarket and in the hallway of the Campus Diner.
This project is in close collaboration with Averda, who will collect the aluminium capsules and ship to a vendor in Saudi Arabia where the metal will be recycled.

Do capsules need to be cleaned before we drop them in the bins?
Nope, just drop them and Averda take it from there. Thanks for recycling 🙂
Is there a way we can lobby to get these recycling canisters in the office/lab buildings as well? I suspect the three on campus are going to fill quickly! Thanks so much for this initiative, it’s very much appreciated.
We will let Averda know about this. I totally agree. We’ll keep the community informed.
We need one to be in Marine Operations Building 27
Dear All, is there an update on the possibility to have this across campus? We need one as well. Regards.
