KAUST’s rainy months bring not only water and the potential for flooding and water infiltration into residential building envelopes, but also increased health risks associated with infectious diseases. Keep yourself and others safe, especially with a diverse international community sharing campus spaces:
1. Flood control – Avoid contact with floodwater in low-lying areas near Harbor Walk and Gardens, watch for pooling of water after rains—floodwater may contain chemical and biological contaminants.
2. Health & hygiene – Wash hands frequently, especially after exposure to contaminants. Public handwashing stations are located throughout the campus at communal bathrooms on and off campus (e.g., the spine, campus mosques, and Discovery Square)
3. Keep your living space dry and ventilated – Residential air conditioners should be set to auto and the thermostat maintained between 21C to 23C at all times. Dehumidifiers can be used for residential comfort, and all units should be kept below 60% relative humidity. Keep doors and windows closed.
4. Preventing the breeding of mosquitoes by eliminating stagnant water from puddles, flowerpots, and pet dishes is very important. Mosquito repellents containing the active ingredient DEET should only be used after all other preventive measures have been taken.
5. Any noticeable pooling of water entering a building, or an increase in pest activity at your residence from flies, cockroaches, mosquitoes, etc., should be reported to C&C Campus & Community cccallcenter@kaust.edu.sa or on the KAUST 959 app.
Healthy habits keep KAUST thriving! Support public health and hygiene efforts to ensure a healthy workplace and residential setting for all. Check the KAUSTCentral app regularly for notifications about weather events.
