Marine Researchers Make Waves In Top Journal

Dr. Stein Kaartvedt, Professor of Marine Science, and research scientist Dr. Thor Klevjer, along with a research colleague from the University of Bergen, Norway, have recently published a paper selected as feature article in the highly acclaimed journal Marine Ecology Progress Series.

Their paper discusses the discovery that internal waves cause frequent vertical migrations of pelagic and demersal fish. Their studies in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Namibia provided evidence that these vertical migrations are caused by changes in light penetration through the turbid surface layer of the sea. These findings are particularly significant because vertical movements affect prey encounters, growth, and survival of the fishes.
