Facilities & Community is pleased to announce the next step in the KAUST sustainability drive; the replacement of all incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient LED light bulbs.
The replacement program will:
- Be undertaken primarily during the upcoming preventive maintenance cycle.
- Be orderly and will take approximately four months to cover all of the KAUST community.
- Benefit the whole KAUST community as it will reduce energy consumption and, with a bulb life span of five years +, no more blown bulbs.
The aim of the program is to replace energy hungry bulbs with the most efficient bulbs on the market reducing household electricity consumption related to lighting by 75% and associated greenhouse emissions by 10%.
The final stage of the replacement program will be the phasing out the halogen bulbs at the end of 2015.
Please contact energyconservation@kaust.edu.sa for any clarification on the program and we welcome all other energy saving ideas.

This is fantastic news! What a great effort. Thanks to everyone who put in time, energy and passion to make this a reality!
The ball is really rolling now: Residential solar hot water heaters, capacitors on the AC’s to stop load spikes, awnings on the windows to reduce heat ingress, smart AC controls in the house, and a global fine-grained energy monitoring system, HERE WE COME!!
Super excited.
What an amazing initiative! Very proud of your great efforts.
Home LED lighting: Great! Will there be community input regarding choices in output color and diffusion characteristics? (color temperature and rendering index, lens type)
Dear John
Thank you for your comment regarding installation of the energy efficient lighting shortly to be installed throughout KAUST. Kindly note that we have selected and LED type that matches, to the extent possible, the existing incandescent in terms of color range and light intensity. As such, community input will not be sought at this time.
Once again, thank you for the taking the time to comment on this great initiative.
really a great long awaited initiative.
the same must be done for the street lamps plus we must run the campaign to aware people to cut down on power consumption.
We must try to cut down electricity consumption in public areas also e.g. in Mosques: the lights and chandeliers must be turned off after prayer. the same can be followed in Golf course when its not used.
Iam just curious to know that how the change of bulbs would take place? do we need to raise ticket on helpdesk or is it scheduled task and all residents would be informed accordingly?
Dear Syed
Thank you for your great comments. Rest assured, we are working towards total use of sustainable lighting throughout KAUST. Regarding your question about arranging for your household bulbs to be changed; this is currently being run through scheduled appointments and residents will be contacted accordingly. However we will try to expedite your appointment as you seem interested to expedite. Many thanks
Regards
Aiman
