HSE Road Safety Update: Reversing safely: protect yourself and those around you

Reversing may seem straightforward, but it’s one of the most common causes of preventable road traffic accidents at KAUST. Safe driving means staying alert and preventing accidents, whether moving forward or in reverse. Protect yourself and those around you by following these five simple but effective steps to help prevent reversing incidents before they happen.

What you can do to reverse safely

  1. Stop distractions. Phones, radios, and multitasking can impair your attention and judgment.
  2. Check your surroundings. Before reversing, scan for side clearance, pedestrians (especially children), other vehicles, and animals.
  3. Use your eyes, not just technology. Cameras and sensors can miss small children or low obstacles. Turn your body and look through the rear window while reversing. Even with mirrors and cameras, every vehicle has blind spots. Regularly check and adjust your mirrors and stay aware of what you can’t see.
  4. Don’t rush. Many reversing incidents happen when drivers feel pressured to move quickly. Take your time.
  5. Stop before turning forward. Come to a complete stop before shifting back to drive and moving forward to ensure it is safe to proceed.
