Fire prevention is a shared responsibility at KAUST. Where ceiling-mounted sprinklers and smoke detectors are installed, their purpose is to detect and suppress fires at the earliest possible stage. Any action that interferes with these life-saving systems is strictly prohibited, as it can delay activation, reduce fire suppression, and increase the risk of uncontrollable fire spread—potentially leading to the loss of lives and property.
Building occupant responsibilities
- Do not use sprinkler heads to hang clothes, decorations, or any other materials (See image 1).
- Keep sprinklers and smoke detectors unobstructed. Maintain at least 18 inches (46 cm) of clear space below sprinklers, and ensure no items are placed within 3 feet (1 meter) of detectors.
- Avoid placing shelves or tall appliances in front of side-wall-mounted sprinklers.
- Do not alter, cover, or install anything that may block or interfere with fire protection systems.
- Report immediately any damaged or blocked sprinkler heads or detectors to the Campus and Community Helpdesk at 012 8080959.
- Never tamper with, paint over, cover, or disable fire protection devices.
