HSE Environmental update: New Fishing Guidelines introduced at KAUST

KAUST is fortunate to be situated by the Red Sea, home to an incredible array of marine biodiversity. While fishing is a popular and rewarding activity, it is essential to practice it responsibly to ensure both safety and sustainability. In light of this, KAUST has introduced new Fishing Guidelines designed to help our community enjoy fishing while protecting our local marine environment.

These guidelines have been thoughtfully developed to balance the needs of our community with the preservation of local marine life. Adhering to these requirements will ensure a respectful and environmentally conscious fishing experience for all.

Key guidelines

  • Permitted locations and gear: Fishing is only allowed in designated areas using approved gear.
  • Safety guidelines: Follow best practices for safe fishing.
  • Catch limits: Respect daily catch limits for commonly caught species.
  • Fishing seasons: Observe the seasonal calendar for fishing restrictions.
  • Protected species: Avoid catching species that are threatened or protected.
  • Food safety: Follow food safety guidelines for properly handling and consuming fish.

By following these guidelines, we can create a culture of safe and sustainable fishing at KAUST. While the Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) team will continue to offer support through outreach and education, it is the responsibility of the community to adhere to these standards in daily practice.

Thank you for helping to preserve our marine life and maintain a safe environment at KAUST!
