Campus and Community (C&C) is delighted to announce that, as part of the ongoing progress of the KAUST recycling and composting program, compost produced from organic waste generated on campus will be distributed free of charge to households registered in the KAUST Composting Program.
The compost is produced at the KAUST composting facility by Edama Solutions using food and garden waste collected within the community.
This effort demonstrates KAUST’s commitment to circular resource management—transforming locally generated organic waste into a valuable resource that can be returned to the soil. The KAUST Landscaping team is already using the compost to support campus landscaping and soil health.
Distribution
The Waste Management team will distribute ready-to-use compost in temporary packaging to all registered households.
Compost packages will be placed at residents’ front doors, with distribution expected to begin gradually from the second week of March. Residents are encouraged to use the compost as soon as possible after receiving it.

- Around trees and shrubs
How to apply
Pots and planters
Mix 20–30% compost with existing soil or apply a 2–3 cm top layer and water thoroughly. Garden beds
Spread 3–5 cm of compost and mix into the top 15–20 cm of soil before planting. For established beds, apply a 2–3 cm layer on the surface.
Trees and shrubs
Apply a 2–3 cm layer around the base, keeping the compost away from the trunk, and water well after application.
Tip: Compost is nutrient-rich. Apply moderate amounts and water after each use. Store any unused compost in a cool, shaded area.

Compost available for purchase
Edama compost will also be available for purchase at the Matjar Store starting April 2026.
Join the KAUST Composting Program
Residents who are not yet participating are encouraged to join the Composting Program. By separating food waste at home, residents help divert organic waste from landfill and support campus sustainability efforts.
Please ensure food waste is separated correctly to avoid contamination, which can complicate the composting process. Residents who are not yet registered and do not have an external organic waste bin can sign up for the program.
