Certain areas of KAUST are currently experiencing a swarm of field crickets, comprising two species: Teleogryllus commodus and Gryllus bimaculatus. Although they are known for their distinctive chirping sound, these insects do not pose any threat as they are harmless and do not carry diseases or bite. However, their presence may be considered bothersome by some. As a precaution, we advise members of the community to take necessary measures to avoid ingestion of these insects while outdoors.
Here are some quick facts and notes about crickets:
- Live for around 3 months
- Rainfall stimulates egg laying which happens in soil
- Feeds on plant matter (e.g. leaves, grass)
- Can fly long distances and most active at night
- They are a critical food source for many birds
Black crickets thrive in well-lit areas, try to reduce unnecessary outdoor lighting
