• Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of worldwide death

Diabetes describes a group of diseases characterized by high blood glucose levels (blood sugar); it occurs when a person’s body is unable to produce and/or use insulin. The burden of diabetes is increasing globally, particularly in developing countries, mostly due to rapid increases in overweight, obesity, and physical inactivity. The effects of diabetes include long–term damage, dysfunction, and failure of various organs (WHO 1999).
