A Reminder – President’s distinguished visiting speaker series tomorrow

The Story of Blue LEDs and Energy Efficient Lighting

Speaker: Shuji Nakamura, Nobel Prize winner in physics

Thursday, June 4
4:00 p.m.
Lecture Hall 1, Room 2322
Engineering Science Hall (building 9)

In this seminar, Nobel Laureate Shuji Nakamura will discuss the history and background of the key scientific issues solved in order to realize high efficiency LED-based lighting.

The invention of high brightness blue light emitting diodes (LEDs), has led to the development of energy efficient white LED bulbs, that will help to save up to 20% of global electricity consumption. High brightness LEDs have been widely used in energy efficient displays for mobile devices such as smartphones, laptop computers, and more.

This invention is expected to find important applications in water sterilization, visible light communications for high-speed Internet connections, indoor horticulture, and other uses. There were many breakthroughs in science and technology that led to this revolutionary invention.
