Are you thinking what to do this weekend? WEP 2022 has it covered. Get hands on with mangrove planting up at the KAM, relax with piano music in the global garden (aka the International Arboretum) and enjoy the film festival of award-winning documentaries: read on for all the details.

Film Screening | The Rescue

Discovery Cinema. 16:00 – 18:00. The Rescue chronicles the enthralling, against-all-odds rescue of twelve boys and their coach from deep inside a flooded cave in Northern Thailand. Directed by Academy Award Winners Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi.

Film Screening | The Last Ice

Discovery Cinema. 19:00 – 21:00. Directed by Scott Ressler, and executive produced by Dr. Enric Sala, National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence and founder of National Geographic Pristine Seas, The Last Ice tells the story of Inuit communities fighting to protect the rapidly disappearing Arctic that has been their home for centuries.

Saturday January 15
Film Screening | Rebuilding Paradise

Discovery Cinema. 16:00 – 18:00. On the morning of November 8, 2018, a devastating firestorm engulfed the picturesque city of Paradise, California. By the time the Camp Fire was extinguished, it had killed 85 people, displaced 50,000 residents, and destroyed 95% of local structures. It was the deadliest U.S. fire in 100 years. Rebuilding Paradise, from Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard, is a moving story of resilience in the face of tragedy, as a community ravaged by disaster comes together to recover what was lost and begin the critical task of rebuilding.

Pianos and Picnic in the Park

International Arboretum, Island. 17:00 – 19:00. Community Life and the Office of Culture, Enrichment, and Engagement invite you to bring a picnic and a rug for the grass to enjoy a lovely evening of music.

Film Screening | The Cave

Discovery Cinema. 19:00 – 21:00. Oscar nominee Feras Fayyad (Last Men in Aleppo) delivers an unflinching story of the Syrian war with his powerful new documentary, The Cave. For besieged civilians, hope and safety lie underground inside the subterranean hospital known as the Cave, where pediatrician and managing physician Dr. Amani Ballour and her colleagues Samaher and Dr. Alaa have claimed their right to work as equals alongside their male counterparts, doing their jobs in a way that would be unthinkable in the oppressively patriarchal culture that exists above. Following the women, as they contend with daily bombardments, chronic supply shortages, and the ever-present threat of chemical attacks, The Cave paints a stirring portrait of courage, resilience, and female solidarity.
