In celebration of World Environment Day and to support sustainable practices in the community, we are pleased to announce that plastic checkout bags will no longer be available at KAUST Tamimi Markets and Oasis Minimarket, starting July 1.
KAUST has also recently co-signed a global statement on the United Nations Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development which indicates our commitment to promote sustainable practices in our community, Saudi Arabia, and around the world.

Are you concerned because you don’t have reusable bags, or that you might not have enough? Don’t worry, we’re hosting a reusable bag giveaway and awareness campaign!
The deadline to register for free bags has been extended. Register before July 3 to receive your own reusable bags delivered to your home!
Want to make an even larger positive impact? If you are already supporting sustainability by using your own reusable bags for shopping, you can give away these free bags to KAUST service providers.
Additionally, Tamimi markets and Oasis Minimarket have reusable bag options available for purchase.

I think the idea is good. In practice, people just go to supermarket after work.
When we live in France, we have to buy each time a new reusable bags when we forget.
We end up by having lots of them.
I think the best is not avoiding providing bags, but providing bags that are bio-degradable not plastic one.
so that people can reuse it for their rubbish bin.
Supermarkets are happy because they no longer need to provide plastics bags for their customers for free.
That raises their ROIs.
It is my understanding that biodegradable bags are not as good as they have made us think. These bags only biodegrade if they are processed under specific conditions (microbe-rich environment), so it does not make a huge change compared to plastic bags if they are sent to landfills.
I think it’s a great intuitive, kaust community life should distribute free reusable bags to community members. This would encourage everyone in the community
