What does water mean to you?

The United Nations (UN) adopted a resolution in 1993 to declare March 22 World Water Day‘ to highlight the importance of access to water and sanitation, which are also included in the UN Sustainable Development Goals. World Water Day celebrates water and raises awareness of the global water crisis. 

This year’s World Water Day theme is “What does water mean to you”?  To find out more and join in the conversation, visit World Water Day and use the hashtag #Water2me

We are marking the day here at KAUST and have planned activities for you to participate in. Please follow all Keeping KAUST Safe guidelines  including practicing social distancing and wearing face coverings.

Sunday, March 21

There will be 1-hour walking tours of the Golf Course starting at 4:45 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to learn more about the use and management of water.  Meet at the Golf Club Reception.  Numbers are limited, so arrive promptly to get in the group!

Sunday, March 21 – Tuesday, March 23

What does water mean to you?  Enter our competitions:

  • Ages 4 – 12 – Draw a picture to describe what water means to you
  • Ages 12 and up – Write a short story or poem about what water means to you

Monday, March 22

  • Worldwide Walk for Water is being planned globally and you are challenged to walk 4 miles (6km) on March 22. 4 miles is the average distance some people have to walk to get their water. 
  • 9.30 a.m. – 12.00 noon and from 1:30 p.m. –  5:00 p.m. The Water Desalination Research Center (Entrance at the back of Building 23) are hosting 20 mins tours to learn more about the Tahlia Almiah pilot for seawater desalination and water membrane research. Book your spot by emailing wdrc.admin@kaust.edu.sa
  • 12 noon – 2:00 p.m. – Water Desalination Research Center Lobby area (Building 4, Level 4). View the poster illustration of waterborne diseases and the pathogen involved. 
  • 3.00 p.m. – 5.00 p.m. The Water Desalination Plant is hosting 25 mins tours. Transportation provided. Tours are appropriate for age 7 plus. Register here.
  • 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. – Main Tamimi Store – Come and try out the Water Test Challenge to see how similar the KAUST water is to the bottled water that you purchase at Tamimi. 
  • 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. on Harbor Walk (near the I LOVE KAUST sign) Join the Students for Sustainability to conduct interesting experiments and learn the science of cleaning and reusing water.  Make your own water treatment/filtration plant from a kit, which explores various ways to disinfect dirty water (including solar power)!  All ages are welcome. Register here.
  • 8:30 p.m.  – 9:15 p.m. Water Trivia night: Join an exciting online quiz night and win sustainable prizes. The Quiz will focus on the World Water Day, environment, and role of water in sustainable development. For more information and registration, please click here.

Friday, March 26

Screening of the documentary “The Story of Water” at the Auditorium between building 4 and 5 from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. 

Focusing on the critical value of our most precious natural resource and exploring the ongoing threats to its future – both globally and in Ireland. The movie will be followed by a discussion. For registration, please click here.
