Dear KAUST community,

Happy New Year!

I want to address the critical importance of achieving full participation in the second Ministry of Health (MoH) COVID-19 testing program at KAUST, which is scheduled to start on January 17.

The first MoH COVID-19 Screening Program was held in November and resulted in 5,059 individual tests being completed across five testing days. A total of 13 positive, asymptomatic individuals were identified and would have otherwise gone unrecognized, and potentially infected others, which shows the importance of continued testing.

Though this level of participation was welcome and very helpful to our ongoing mitigation measures, we want to achieve a considerably higher level of participation in the second round of MoH testing in order to Keep KAUST Safe.

Specifically, we believe we can achieve a considerable improvement in participation levels of dependents and domestic helpers. In November, just 60% of dependents chose to participate in the MoH testing program. We are calling for a much higher level of participation by dependents in the January MoH testing program. To help achieve full participation in the second round of MoH testing, and to provide our best effort in Keeping KAUST Safe we have made participation mandatory

At this stage of the pandemic, when we can see hope in the arrival of vaccines and their rollout in Kingdom and abroad but also the ongoing threat of COVID-19 in the second and third waves in many countries, we believe strongly that maximum levels of testing are crucial to our ongoing success in limiting COVID-19 at KAUST. I hope you will join us in that effort and also ensure everyone in your household required to participate does in this round of MoH testing.

Participation in the MoH COVID-19 Screening Program is now MANDATORY for:

  • ALL KAUST residents aged 18 years and over, including all KAUST employees, students, domestic helpers, drivers, service providers, contractors, etc.
  • All employees and graduate students living and working in Kingdom outside of KAUST

Keeping KAUST safe continues to be our number one priority and the second round of the COVID-19 Screening Program is another step towards our common goal of returning to a “new normal.”
