Thermal based Reverse Osmosis brine management

By Yogen Parikh, Environmental consultant

Abstract

Reverse Osmosis (RO) is known for making very pure water, but RO also makes a lot of wastewater known as RO Reject or RO Brine Concentrate. This saline water may be prohibitive to discharge in the local sewer, and hauling the wastewater to a treatment facility is expensive. Evaporation is one of the most economical and environmentally safe ways to dispose of RO rejects, mainly brackish or salty water. This complete water treatment system is free of complicated machinery and chemistry, and it will save cost in the long-run.

To meet with the growing water requirements, along with the wastewater from municipal sewage treatment plant, it is critical to consider the reuse of wastewater from the industries wherever possible. This has already started in some of the big industries and it should be implemented at all possible scopes.

The talk will comprise fundamental types of industrial evaporators and crystallizers used for wastewater treatment, brine management and zero liquid discharge. Understanding the trade-offs between the different technologies will be also be discussed.
