What is a smart home to you?

Imagine yourself in your future home a few years from now… What would it look and feel like? How can your living space adapt to your specific needs as they change?

In these extraordinary times, most of us are spending a lot more time in our homes than we are used to doing.

What learnings have we made around using our home environment differently? Facilities Management, Community Life and KAUST Smart—together with our partner Treehouse Innovation—would like to take this opportunity to ask you to share any insights, thoughts and ideas you may have around designing an ideal smart home of the future. What is a smart home to YOU?

In order to accommodate input from our community, we will conduct research and host a series of virtual workshops over the next few weeks.

This is the first time we attempt to do something like this 100 percent virtually and, as always, KAUST Smart is dependent on your participation. You can choose to participate in the following types of sessions based on whatever you’re most interested in and what suits you the best:

  • Design Thinking 101 – Introduction
We will kick off the series of workshops with an introduction to Design Thinking. In this 90-minute workshop, you will learn the basics of Design Thinking, and our design challenge will be “working from home.”
  • Group Interviews
Share your thoughts, ideas or insights on the future smart home in a small facilitated group setting online. Each session will last for 1 hour to 1.5 hours, and the insight from the group interviews will serve as a base for the Design Thinking workshop further down the line.
  • Video/photo journal
This is an activity that you could do at home yourself or with your family in your own time. Do you have a home improvement project you would like to share? Show or tell us about the smart home concepts/ideas that you are passionate about. All ideas are welcome.
  • Online survey
Take part in our online survey and tell us about your habits and interests. The data from the survey is an important part of our research and will be used in our Design Thinking workshops.
  • Design Thinking – Workshops
In these facilitated sessions, we will ideate around specific smart home concepts using Design Thinking as our methodology. The sessions will be highly interactive and you will be introduced to tools that will help visualize and support the concepts we create. Each session will last for up to 2 hours.
  • Design Thinking – Focus groups
Once we have generated ideas and concepts, we’ll create some very early prototypes that we’d like to share with you in order to get your feedback so we can build on these and develop them further.

In order for KAUST Smart to plan and facilitate the virtual workshops and sessions, please let us know which session you would like to participate in by registering your interest by April 16 here.

We will get back to you with confirmed dates and times shortly. We are looking forward to seeing you virtually!
