Single use plastic bottles will no longer be available at the Campus Diner, Al-Marsa, and other participating locations.

Community Life is pleased to announce that Tamimi and Coastline are phasing out the sale of single-use plastic water bottles in its KAUST dining facilities, starting with: The Campus Diner, The Facilities Diner, Pure, the Harbor and Racquet Club restaurants, the 10th Hole at the Golf Club, and Al-Marsa Restaurant. This change will begin implementation from Thursday, April 25, 2019.

Please bring your own reusable bottles or use the glasses provided. Also keep an eye out for the new addition of water stations, fountains and coolers that are being installed around the community. Help yourself: It’s free!

Thank you for doing your part to reduce, reuse, reclaim, and recycle!

  1. This is the best news so far today!! I hope other retailers on campus will follow. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Next steps is to ban straws, plastic cutlery, plastic/melamine plates, and Tamimi shopping bags. Let’s be consequent and strive towards a plastic-free campus !

  2. I think, we should have started with the most problematic items : any kind of plastic shopping bags and straws! We should focus and start first with resolving real problems and react to wast of energy, instead.
It is just an OK move, concerning the bottle.
I do not drink tap water : I lose equilibrium whenever I drink it.
There are many ways to overcome the use of “plastic bottle” without obliging us to use tap water !!! and plastic bottle are everywhere and in many products: not only water !!!! Restaurants and other spaces cannot oblige us to drink tap water. “Perrier” is allowed as it is a glass bottle: for your information it exists water in glass bottles.

    • Hi Nabila, the water given in restaurants is filtered water, it’s not straight from the tap. It is safe for human consumption. I also do not drink tap water at home. It tastes too much like chlorine. As for the straws and Tamimi bags, I totally agree. This “move” should be consequent and therefore ALL plastic should be removed, including forks, spoons, knives and plates. You mention bottled water in glass containers.. Did you know glass is not recycled at KAUST? I believe the filtered water is than the best choice.

  3. Awesome initiative! A suggestion: think about providing jugs at restaurants, so people can fill those and do not have to constantly refill the glass at the water fountains during meals.
