As part of the Earth Day celebrations, Health Safety and Environment are offering four birds in April. Earth Day is actually on April 25 and this year will be celebrated at the Safaa Golf Club. The theme of this year’s Earth Day is ‘Protecting Our Species’ and so the community walks will concentrate on some of the protected areas at KAUST.

The first walk will be around the Nature Conservation Area, on Saturday April 20, meeting in the King Abdullah Monument car park at 6:30 a.m. The walk will take about 90 minutes and cover about 3 km. We should see a mixture of park birds around the gardens and then a variety of water birds in the mangroves and on the mudflats.

Two walks will offered on Earth Day itself (April 25) at the golf course where a number of areas also receive protection.

The first Earth Day walk will start at 4:00 p.m., meeting in the golf club reception, This is for juniors and limited to just 12 participants. Children should be at least 7 years of age and parents are invited to accompany their children. If you are intending to sign up more than one child please let me know because we will be using the golf buggies and space is limited.

The second Earth Day walk is for all community members and starts at 5:15 p.m. We will meet in the golf club reception area and make a walk around the golf club area. We will finish up at the Earth Day event and should be finished by 6:30 p.m.

On Saturday April 27, a walk will be held around the Island Mangroves. We will meet at the Island Mosque at 6:30 a.m. and the walk will take around 90 minutes. The walk is aimed at adults but children over 10 years are welcome.

For each of the walk a limited number of pairs of binoculars are available on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. Please bring your own if you have them. As the weather should start to heat up now please also remember to bring a hat and water.
