KAUST Research Workshop on Optimization and Big Data

February 5–7, 2018

Call for Posters

The age of “big data” is here: data of unprecedented sizes is becoming ubiquitous, which brings new challenges and new opportunities. With this comes the need to solve optimization problems of unprecedented sizes. Machine learning, compressed sensing, imagining, social network science and computational biology are some of many prominent application domains where it is increasingly common to formulate and solve optimization problems with billions of variables. Classical algorithms are not designed to scale to instances of this size and hence new approaches are needed. These approaches utilize novel algorithmic design involving tools such as distributed and parallel computing, randomization, asynchronicity, decomposition, sketching and streaming.

The KAUST Research Workshop on Optimization and Big Data aims to bring together leading and rising researchers from academia and industry working on novel optimization algorithms and distributed systems capable of working in the Big Data setting to present and discuss their work. The event is open to the KAUST community.

There will be a poster session at the workshop, providing an opportunity to international and KAUST MS and PhD students to present their research, and an excellent venue for extended informal discussion with conference attendees. The poster session will be preceded by a session of short talks (a few minutes) advertising the posters.

Submission guidelines

All poster contributors are requested to register for the conference through the registration page . Subsequently, please send the poster title, list of authors, and an abstract (limited to 200 words) summarizing the research to be presented on the poster to Prof. Peter Richtarik by email: peter.richtarik@kaust.edu.sa. If you have the poster ready, send the poster (in PDF format) instead.

Important dates

  • Tuesday, January 16: Deadline for title and abstract submission.
  • Thursday, January 18: Notification of selected posters.
  • Wednesday, January 24: Final submission of the accepted posters (PDF format). Send the files by email to Prof. Peter Richtarik by email: peter.richtarik@kaust.edu.sa . If you need your poster to be printed, we can do so. In such a case, indicate this in your email.
  • February 5-7: Poster authors will present their work in a short talk and in a poster session. Exact timings will be announced closer to the date of the workshop. Bldg. 19 conference Hall 2.
  • Wednesday, February 7: Announcement of the winning poster(s). Bldg. 19 conference Hall 2.
