Message from the Provost: New CEMSE Dean

Dear Colleagues,
It is with great pleasure that I announce the arrival of our new Dean for Computer, Electrical, and Mathematical Sciences and Engineering (CEMSE), Professor Mootaz Elnozahy. Professor Elnozahy comes to KAUST from IBM Research in Austin, Texas, where he was a Senior Manager and Master Inventor. At the same time, he was an adjunct professor in the Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin.

Prior to joining IBM in 1997, Professor Elnozahy was on the faculty at the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University from 1993 to 1997. He was also a visiting scholar at Bell Labs and Bellcore. During his tenure at IBM, he held several leadership positions at both the product development and the research divisions.

He received his PhD in Computer Science in 1993 from Rice University. His personal research area is in systems, including high performance computing, power-aware computing, fault tolerance, operating systems, system architecture, and distributed systems. His PhD work on rollback-recovery is now a standard component of graduate courses in fault-tolerant computing. While at IBM Research, he led the design and implementation of the first prototype ever of a general-purpose computer server out of low-power components. In 2010, in recognition of his work on fault tolerance and low power computers, he was elevated to an IEEE Fellow.

Research excellence is one of IBM’s well recognized strengths, as is the company’s capacity to bring major programs from the labs to the market. KAUST is very fortunate to have attracted a scholar and manager of the caliber of Mootaz Elnozahy to lead a Division that regroups disciplines ideally positioned to fulfill both our academic and economic development aspirations. I know you will join our President and me in welcoming him warmly.

Stefan Catsicas
Provost
