HSE Road Safety update: Keep a safe distance

Safe drivers focus on the road, whether they are driving or riding. They prevent accidents and reduce the risk of injury by staying attentive. They watch out for vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, and e-scooter riders. By staying alert and aware, they share the road responsibly and avoid collisions.

A safe driver avoids tailgating

Tailgating is an unsafe act that involves following another vehicle too closely and it is prohibited in KAUST.

  • A safe driver never follows other vehicles too closely.
  • They never tailgate emergency vehicles, maintaining at least 15 meters (49 feet) or more when needed.
  • They always leave a minimum two-second gap between their vehicle and the one ahead.
  • They recognize that tailgating increases the risk of a crashes, especially if the vehicle ahead brakes suddenly—so they keep a safe distance to allow time to react.

A safe driver gives space to vulnerable road users

  • A safe driver gives bicycles, e-scooters, and other alternative transport plenty of room.
  • When passing, they leave at least 1.5 meters (5 feet) between their vehicle and the other road user.
  • In poor weather, they slow down and increase their following distance to stay safe and protect others.
