Important travel update | New guidelines for carrying controlled medication

Dear Community,

To ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience, please be informed of new guidelines from the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) regarding the carriage of controlled medications containing narcotic or psychotropic substances when entering or departing from Saudi Arabia. These guidelines take effect from November 1, 2025

The SFDA has introduced a streamlined process to facilitate your journey while upholding the highest safety standards.

Key highlights of the new process:

  • Online application: Travelers must now apply for a clearance permit electronically through the official SFDA Controlled Drug System (CDS) at: https://cds.sfda.gov.sa
  • Simple steps: The process involves creating a personal account, submitting a permit request with patient and travel details, and uploading the required documents.
  • Real-time tracking: You can easily track your application status, which will be clearly shown as “Submitted,” “Completed,” “Rejected,” or “Incomplete.”

Required documents for application:

When applying, please have the following ready to upload:

  • A valid prescription for the medication.
  • A supporting medical report.
  • Proof of identity (e.g., Passport).
  • Accurate medication details (Trade Name, Active Ingredient, Concentration, and Quantity).

Why this is important:

This system is designed to protect patient rights, prevent the misuse of controlled substances, and provide a convenient, secure way for travelers to obtain the necessary clearances well in advance of their journey. It eliminates the need for last-minute procedures and potential travel disruptions.

Act now before you travel:

We strongly advise all community members who travel with prescribed controlled medication to familiarize themselves with this new process.
