FloodWise at KAUST: 5 tips to prepare, evacuate, and stay safe

Know your route, pack your kit, and stay informed—flood safety starts with planning.

Flooding can occur quickly along the Red Sea coast. KAUST is equipped with emergency
alert systems and designated shelters—know them before the storm hits:

1.Identify safe evacuation routes

Find your nearest high ground in your neighborhood. Maps are available through KAUST Central. Please practice evacuation routes with your housemates or family.

2. Sign up for KAUST emergency alerts

Enable notifications in the KAUST Central and ensure your email is registered. Follow @KAUST_Official on Instagram and Twitter/X for real-time updates. Emergency messages will also broadcast in campus buildings, as necessary.

3. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters

Campus roads can sometimes flood rapidly in a bad storm. Do not attempt to cross if water is present. Always wait for Facilities clearance before using underground parking.

4.Prepare a go-bag with essentials

Pack water, snacks, prescription medications, government and KAUST IDs, and a phone charger. Include a raincoat/umbrella and extra shoes in a waterproof backpack. Pre-label everything with your name and KAUST housing number.

5.Know how to shut off utilities

Review your apartment or house emergency guide for shutoff or notification procedures; if uncertain, contact Facilities Management for a tutorial. Keep a flashlight handy for easy access at night in case of any power loss.

Emergency readiness saves lives! Take the time this week to review flood safety with your
KAUST neighbors and help newcomers get oriented.
