HSE Road Safety Update: STOP Sign Rules

Safe driving starts with understanding how to share the road with others—whether they’re in cars, on e-scooters, motorcycles, bicycles, or walking.  With so many different types of vehicles and pedestrians moving through campus, STOP signs play an important role in keeping our roads safe at KAUST. When all road users follow STOP sign rules, the risk of accidents is greatly reduced.

When to STOP and Wait

  • Where a STOP sign is posted or road marking indicates “STOP”, vehicles, including e-scooter riders, must come to a full stop.
  • When a school crossing patrol or Security Officer signals “Stop.”
  • When a school bus STOP arm is extended. Do not overtake the bus while the STOP arm is extended. Vehicles approaching both from behind and in front of the bus must come to a full stop. Only proceed once the STOP arm is retracted and it is safe to do so. Please watch this short video that shows what actions drivers must take when the STOP arm is extended.
  • At intersections without STOP or YIELD signs, drivers must treat the intersection as a yield; Yield or give way to vehicles already in the intersection and drivers who arrive at the intersection before them.

Good to Know

  • In wet weather, stopping distances will be at least double those required for stopping on dry roads. Take extra care around vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, e-scooter riders and bicyclists.
  • Drivers must be extra alert when driving near micromobility users. E-scooters typically don’t have turn signals or brake lights and may not signal their intention to STOP or to turn.
  • Bicyclists are not required to come to a full stop at a STOP sign if there is no other traffic in the vicinity. Cyclists must assess the traffic situation while approaching the STOP sign, slow down to a reasonable speed, and ride through only after ensuring their way is clear and it is safe to do so.
  • Vehicles are permitted to make a right turn at a red light after coming to a complete stop at the intersection and ensuring that there is no approaching traffic, and it is safe to proceed.
