ACL Training: Thermogravimetric Analysis

Saturday and Sunday, Oct 20 and 21
Ibn Sina Building (building 3), level 3, room 3320 (course starts at 9:00 a.m.)

The Analytical Core Lab (ACL) is offering a basic training course on the use and application of Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). TGA is a technique in which the mass of a substance is monitored as a function of temperature and time. TGA is commonly employed in research and testing to determine characteristics of materials such as polymers. Typical properties of materials obtainable from TGA data include degradation temperatures, absorbed moisture content, as well as the level of inorganic and organic components. The course will include the basic theory of operation and an overview of TGA major applications. Furthermore, attendees will have the opportunity of group participation in a hands-on session.

Course Outline:
• Definition & Theory of Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA)
• Operation of the Netzsch 209 F TG Analyzer
• Modes of Analysis
• Qualitative and Quantitative Interpretation of TGA Data
• Typical TG Effects
• Common Maintenance Practices
• Major Applications
• Challenges and Limitations of TGA
• Hands-on Training
