The KAUST Coral Restoration Initiative (KCRI) invites you to the seminar “Coral Disease: A Global Threat,” led by Dr. Greta Smith Aeby.

Dr. Aeby received her Ph.D. from the University of Hawaii, working on the evolutionary ecology of a marine parasite that infects coral and reef fish. She then completed her postdoctoral training in coral bleaching and diseases at the University of West Florida. Dr. Aeby was an assistant researcher at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology at the University of Hawaii for over a decade, where her lab conducted research on the epizootiology of coral and fish disease in Hawaii, across the Indo-Pacific, and in the Middle East. She is now a consultant investigating stony coral tissue-loss disease in Florida at the Smithsonian Marine Station and Nova Southeastern University. She also works with the Joint Nature Conservation Committee in the United Kingdom, helping the Caribbean Overseas Territories understand and manage coral diseases.

The objective of the seminar

The seminar will provide an understanding of coral disease ecology and an awareness of the threats of coral disease to encourage citizens in Saudi Arabia to consider coral disease as a research avenue and to integrate coral disease monitoring into coral reef survey programs.

Visit our website to learn more about the initiative. We look forward to seeing you at the seminar.
