King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) demonstrated its unwavering commitment to responsible waste management and the promotion of sustainable practices again through a recent visit to the Holoul E-Waste Recycling plant. This visit, which occurred on November 15th, was organized as part of the “Follow your Waste” waste management initiative, led by KAUST Facilities Management’s waste management services.

The event brought together key stakeholders from various departments within KAUST, including the Sustainability Office, Health, Safety and Environment, IT, and FM, providing them with a first-hand look at the intricate processes involved in recycling Waste Electrical and Electronics Equipment (WEEE) and its crucial role in environmental stewardship.

WEEE, which frequently results from KAUST’s activities and operations, encompasses waste products that rely on batteries or power supplies for proper functioning. KAUST Facilities Management’s waste management service collaborates closely with local recycling partners to ensure the safe and environmentally responsible recycling of WEEE generated on the campus. This includes items like computers, monitors, printers, laboratory equipment, and household appliances.

The highlight of this initiative was a guided tour of the Holoul E-Waste Recycling plant, located in the Jeddah Industrial Area and a key component of KAUST’s recycling partner network. The primary objective of this visit was twofold; to showcase KAUST’s dedication to responsible waste management; and to provide a deeper understanding of the WEEE recycling process.

During the visit, the KAUST team received in-depth briefings on the WEEE recycling facility and its operational standards. Furthermore, they were treated to an informative tour of the facility, expertly led by its management team.

Observing the downstream WEEE recycling processes, the plant’s supporting equipment, and the recycling industry’s role in contributing to the sustainable development of the Kingdom left an indelible impression. It was enlightening to learn that the facility’s final products are forwarded to both local and global industries for further processing, such as the extraction of precious metals and parts reuse.

KAUST Facilities Management’s waste management services are firmly committed to cultivating robust alliances with the local community and recycling partners. This steadfast commitment guarantees transparent, responsible, and eco-conscious waste management practices that not only contribute to environmental well-being but also foster social and economic growth in alignment with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals.
