Towards Sustainable Water Practices at KAUST

In a recent panel discussion session hosted by The KAUST School, Facilities Management (FM) engaged in grade 9 research sustainability project with students in an enlightening dialogue about the significance of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. The session featured experts, including Ahmed S. Alhaidari, manager KAUST Water Treatment Plant from FM,  NorEddine Ghaffour, a Professor at KAUST specializing in drinking water treatment technologies, and Andreia S. Farinha, a research scientist in the water-related field.

During the interactive session, students gained invaluable insights into the pivotal role played by Facilities Management in the supply, management, and maintenance of various water related services at KAUST. They were also introduced to the stringent daily testing protocols that ensure the water quality consistently meets the standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO). Importantly, the discussion addressed concerns regarding the safety and suitability of KAUST tap water for drinking purposes, affirming its quality.

The comprehensive discussion spanned several key areas, including the historical water scarcity in the region, the importance of adopting reasonable and sustainable water usage practices, and the role played by FM in providing sustainable and resilient facility services at KAUST. Students delved into the understanding of different types of water, such as Potable water, Fresh water, Gray water, Blackwater, and Treated Sewage Effluent (TSE). The session also highlighted the extent of recycled water usage and the specific areas irrigated with TSE at KAUST.

The panelists emphasized the importance of student involvement in promoting sustainable water practices at KAUST, encouraging students to contribute their ideas and efforts toward responsible water usage.

This annual panel discussion marks the commencement of the students’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) project, connecting them with industry and research experts in the field. The event serves as a platform for students to ask pertinent questions and gain unique insights, enhancing their understanding of sustainable water practices. Following the session, students will embark on their research projects, utilizing various mediums such as videos, podcasts, posters, and more, to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable water practices.

This interactive panel discussion not only equips students with knowledge but also empowers them to make a meaningful impact in promoting sustainable water usage within the KAUST community and beyond. Facilities Management recognizes the importance of sustainability and knowledge sharing among the students of The KAUST School.
